At about 1982 Margaret Thatcher’s visit to Beijing started with the discussion on the plan on what would happen to HK after the 99-year lease on when the New Territories would expire. Meanwhile, China was developing Shenzhen, a small town to the the north of Hong Kong’s border into China’s first Special Economic Zone. Around 1983. September 1984: After 2 years of bitter negotiations, the British and Chinese come to an agreement aka the Joint Declaration, which formally agreed the return of the colony to China in 1997.
