Description:
By the early 1980s, there was a huge issue of its return to China. At about 1982 Margaret Thatcher’s visit to Beijing started with the discussion on the plan on what would happen to HK after the 99-year lease on when the New Territories would expire. Meanwhile, China was developing Shenzhen, a small town to the the north of Hong Kong’s border into China’s first Special Economic Zone. Around 1983. September 1984: After 2 years of bitter negotiations, the British and Chinese come to an agreement aka the Joint Declaration, which formally agreed the return of the colony to China in 1997.
