- The Little Red Book, also called Quotations from Mao Tse-tung, was a book of quotations from speeches and writings of Mao
- Became text used in army study in 1963
- Civilian population expected to own one and it was taught in schools
- Used as CCP propaganda and thought reform
The Diary of Lei Feng
- The Diary of Lei Feng was a diary of a young worker, detailing his dedication to the regime, and his eventual accidental death (there is debate as to whether it was true or not)
- Published in 1963
- Used as propaganda and thought reform, and taught in schools
The Dismissal of Hai Rui from Office
- A play published by Wu Han (a writer critical of Mao) about a soldier defying orders from a cruel emperor
- Performed between 1961-65
- Interpreted as criticising the purge of Peng Dehuai after the Lushan conference
- Wu Han publicly attacked in 1965 and committed suicide 4 years later
- Created splits the party and between CCP and PLA
- Mao's wife Jiang Quing, took a more active role in politics, especially in regards to art
-Was a member of the Shanghai Forum, a group of radical leftists (dominated by the Gang of Four which Jiang was a part of)
