Description:

- Japanese attack US owned Peal Harbour

Before:
- Economic embargo placed on Japan by the Western powers due to Japan's expansion into Indo-China

- Japan could not sustain war with China or industrialisation without embargo lifted (especially on oil)

- They reasoned that Asian markets could replace the ones lost by the embargo

- Negotiations with US continued throughout 1941
- US wanted Japan to "respect the territorial integrity of its neighbours", pursue its policies by "peaceful means", and maintain an "open door" trade policy in areas it has conquered
- Japan did not want to make concessions

- Because negotiations weren't going anywhere, Japan prepared to engage the US

During:
- Japan attacked pearl harbour

- Significantly large loss of air and sea power for the US

- Hong Kong and Singapore also simultaneously attacked by the Japanese

- US momentarily unable to resist Japanese expansion

After:
- Japan conquered a large portion of East Asia over the next half year
