sep 18, 1931 - Mukden incident
Description:
Before the incident:
- Kwantung assassinated Zhang (warlord in Manchuria) in hope that it would allow them to seize control of Manchuria
- Not successful (his son succeeded)
- Emperor ordered PM to enforce discipline, but generals refused (as it would decrease prestige of the army)
- Kwantung army developed plot for taking control of Manchuria independent of the government
- Prime Minister and Emperor warned of the plot and ordered to stop it
- Message to Kwantung held back and not delivered in time
During:
- Kwantung set up the blowing up of the southern Manchurian railway (owned by them)
- Blamed on local rebels as a reason for invading
- Government ordered Kwantung to stop hostilities but the order was ignored
