jun 1, 1971 - Pentagon Papers Documents
Published in NY Times Newspaper
Description:
In June 1971, the New York Times published an article about the Vietnam War based on a series of documents called the Pentagon Papers
The documents contained confidential info about the war and had been leaked to the paper by Daniel Ellsberg, who worked at the Pentagon
The documents weren’t personally damaging to Nixon, but he was furious that someone in administration could leak his secret information
It increased his suspicion of others and made him worry about what else might be revealed
As a result, he set up a group called the White Plumbers, whose job was to prevent more sensitive info being leaked
In September, some of the Plumbers broke into the office of Ellsberg’s psychiatrist, looking for info they could use to discredit him but they didn’t find anything useful
However, the break in showed that the Plumbers were very loyal to the president
