Description:

1) After the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed, USA gained a large amount of new land. So the problem was that should the new territory join as a free state or a slave state. To deal with this, the Compromise of 1850 was passed which made California free and allowed the people to pick in Utah and New Mexico. 2) The war caused the introduction of popular sovereignty and the fierce division on the issue of free and slavery, which is a foreshadowing
of the following conflict.
