apr 16, 1949 - NATO

Description:

In April 1949, the US entered into a peacetime military alliance for the first time since the Revolution. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), included Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, and the US. The agreement stated that an attack on one of these nations, would be an attack on all. In 1955, West Germany joined this pact. The Soviet Union then decided to also create an alliance called the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (COMECON). This alliance consisted of Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and the Soviet Union. NATO established West Germany as the Federal Republic of Germany and the Soviet Union countered by creating the German Democratic Republic. This further divided the continent, leading to the Cold War.
