nov 15, 1947 - The consolidation of West Germany

Description:

When an agreement to consolidate the four zones of Germany could not be reached, the Western Allies decided to combine their three zones. They then prepared to establish an independent federal German republic, using the Marshall plan funds to build the economy. The West allies hoped that this would create a West Berlin showcase 100 miles deep into Soviet territory. However, the Soviet Union did not like this, and in 1948, created a blockade of all traffic to the West. This led to the Berlin Airlift, where American and British piolets flew 2.5 million tons of food and fuel to the people of West Germany. In May of 1949, the Soviet Union lifted their blockade. This consolidation, however, created the split between East and West Germany.
