jun 28, 1969 - Stonewall Riots
Description:
These riots occurred in Stonewall Inn, in Greenwich Village, New York where police officers arrested bar patrons for the clothing they were wearing. The clothing they wore was not traditionally thought to be worn by the opposite gender (women's clothes on men), which is why people who broke the clothing boundaries were discriminated by even the police. After these people were arrested, 400 or more people rioted outside the Stonewall Inn which ended with the police barricading themselves within the bar to protect themselves around the rioters.
Significance: It became a symbol of resistance to social and political discrimination and became a catalyst for new political activism.
