The Treaty of Versailles (AKA 'The Treaty of Peace between the Allied and Associated Powers and Germany') marked the true end of World War I. The fighting had already stopped after the armistice on the 11th of November 1918, but the Treaty of Versailles meant that the regions were finally at peace once again. The Treaty placed Germany in a very disadvantaged position on a range of fronts. They lost 65,000 square kilometres of land, their military was stripped down and restricted, and their reputation as a whole was damaged severely. The biggest blow for them however was that another condition on the treaty meant that Germany had to accept all responsibility for essentially starting the war. They had to pay a total of 132 billion marks to the Allied Forces, which eventually contributed to a broken German economy. The Treaty was signed on 28 June 1919 and was effective as of the 10th of January 1920. It was hated by all Germans and Hitler made sure that he would break it later on as his first step towards strengthening the country.
