jul 19, 1936 - Burning of Churches

Description:

Churches had been burned down by citizens in response to what occurred with Cardinal Segura. The churches had been represented as martyrs. The republic had tried to separate the state and Church by placing laws such as the ban on ringing of church bells and cut off the church’s finance that had been dependent on the state for some time. The right wing had seen the Church as a great representative of resisting the government. This encouraged them to support the Church and parties such as the CEDA.
