jul 13, 1936 - Murder of José Calvo Sotelo
Description:
Sotelo was a Spanish politician and minister of Finance during the dictatorship of Miguel Primo de Rivera. He was a leading figure of the anti-republican right during the Second Republic. Militiamen planned to kidnap Gil Robles but he was not in Madrid at the time. Sotelo was arrested and later shot dead in a police truck by them. His assassination was the prelude to the triggering of the military coup plotted since February 1936. The partial failure of the coup marked the beginning of the Spanish Civil War.
