In the summer of 1971 Nixon had only a 31% approval rating. By the summer of 1972 after his well-publicized visits abroad, his approval soared to 62%. Nixon claimed the Democratic Party was full of “hooligans, hippies, and radical liberals.” Many democrats agreed and voted Republican.
