jan 1, 1968 - Tet Offensive
Description:
On January 30, 1968 Communist forces launched massive attacks. Within 24 hours almost 84,000 communist soldiers had stored more than 100 South Vietnamese cities and towns and a dozen US military bases. “Tet” is the Vietnamese New Year. United States and South Vietnamese retook most of the targets within days or hours but a bitter battle of the ancient city of Hue went on for three weeks. This was a turning point in the war because it showed that no place in South Vietnam (even military base and US embassy) were safe from attack.
