After the success of the Canadarm, NASA invited Canadians to become astronauts in 1983. Marc Garneau was selected along with seven other people, but he was the first Canadian to enter outer space. He was a Payload Specialist on Shuttle Mission 41-G, flown in 1984.Added to timeline:
