The U.S. needed oil we got one third of our oil from OPEC (organization of petroleum exporting countries), 1973 saudi arabia placed an embargo on oil due to being allies with israel. at the same time the OPEC countries quadrulapled their oil prices affecting mainily the steel and auto indursty.
