In the first month of World War I Russia and Germany had a fought called the Battle of Tannenberg. In the past, Poles and Lithuanians fought here against the Order of the Teutonic Knights, which were assisted by German mercenaries. Despite their initial successes, they still lost, resulting in a loss of momentum as a crusade force. The victory of the Germans was presented as revenge for the defeat about five hundred years ago.
