Description:

This was one of the first times I had experienced a form a racism that at the time I had not even been aware of. My white friends and I were talking about what animals we were and I said she was a monkey. She responded that I was a monkey because of my skin color. In the time it was just an innocent comment from a first grader but it wasn't until later on in life I had recognized the implications behind what she had said to me.
