Description:

The Soviet Union shot down the US spy plane that was on a mission to perform a photographic aerial reconnaissance deep in the Soviet territory. The plane was hit by a surface to air missile deep in the Soviet territory, it was flown by Francis Gary Powers that was captured right after the plane was shot down and he was sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Soviets for espionage. The incident also derailed a summit meeting between the US president Eisenhower and Soviet leader Nikita Khruschev.
