aug 10, 1932 - José Sanjuros' coupe

Description:

Initially Sanjuro was in support of the Second Republic. However President Manuel Azaña had never praised him; instead José Sanjuros was demoted to the post of chief of Customs guard. Ever since Sanjuros has had a negative view of the Second Spanish Republic because of his former relationship with the President and involvement with the republic government. Around May 10, 1936 José Sanjuros had united with Generals Emilio Mola, Francisco Franco and Gonzalo in to plan their attack and attempt to overthrow the republican government. General Sanjuro had led the military coup against the republican government, but they weren’t very successful. José Sanjuros ended up being arrested, tried, and sentenced to death. Although the death sentence was later exchanged for life in prison, he was soon released from prison and exiled. As a result of the coup a couple months later the Nationalist uprising had occurred, which then triggered the Spanish Civil War. José Sanjuros was later killed in a plane crash on July 20, 1936, and subtle rumors had spread that General Francisco Franco was responsible for Generals José Sanjuros and Emilio Mola, who was also died in a plane, but the claims were never verified.
