jul 13, 1863 - NYC draft riots

Description:

3 days long, city burned | poor/middle class (mostly irish) are mad that rich can pay $300 to get out of the draft, feels unfair | escalated into an assault on the city's black population, ending in mob lynchings | quelled by Union troops, but 100+ people had died already |

NOTE: Draft issue was also occuring even more severely in Confederacy; "twenty negro provision" exempted one male for every 20 slaves on plantation, releasing owners / overseers --> yeoman's war
