jan 10, 1997 - "Rap: Authentic Expression or Market Construct"
Description:
I connected this article, “Rap: Authentic Expression or Market Construct,” as an assemblage to hooks’ first connection in this diagram. In this article, written in the 1990s, hooks explores the genre of rap music through a feminist, academic, introspective perspective which asks the question, “is rap music empowering, or disrespectful towards women?” In the article, bell hooks explains that rap is both. While young black men are given a platform, and are able to inspire pop culture and music, black women are in many ways more objectified by hip-hop. Hooks explains that this is yet another outcome of our misogynistic social foundation.
