Description:

22.5 million serfs were emancipated in 1861 in Russia. This was due to reform and the Edict of Emancipation which gave serfs full rights of free citizens. Peasants were even able to buy land from their previous landlords. This changed a lot of societal aspects of Russia because of the new status of past serfs.
