Description:

Abraham Lincoln was elected to the office of president of the United States of America in 1860 despite his name was not even listed as a canidate in most of the South. As a Republican, his party’s very anti-slavery outlook struck fear into many Southerners. Some Southerners thought that it was not a valid election, others thought that they had a right to seceed from the Union. On December 20, 1860, over a month after the presidential polls ended , South Carolina seceded from the Union. Six more southern states followed by the spring of 1861.
This was one of the final events that led towards the Civil War.
