may 19, 1828 - Tariff of 1828/Tariff of Abominations
Description:
The tax set a 38% tax on some imported goods and a 45% tax on certain imported raw materials. The tax was set into law by John Quincy Adams. The intended goal of the tariff was to protect Northern industries by taxing goods from Europe so American products would have a better cost than European goods. But some people in the South were worried that the bill may have negative effects on the South's Economy, a majority those from South Carolina, felt they were harmed directly by having to pay higher for goods imported from Europe, because in theory, it would make it harder for the British to buy cotton and other goods from the South.
