may 1, 1931 - Anti-clericalism
Description:
Azana believed that the catholic churches were at fault for Spain's backwardness. He defended the end of the churches' special privileges in light of the fact that Spain had to stop being catholic. This angered a lot of people since religion was such a huge part of the country. Religious properties were constantly being burned during this time and the government refused to take any action to fix this. This event made many people question whether this new government will truly protect their interest.
