apr 29, 1931 - Cardinal Segura's Letter

Description:

Cardinal Segura served as Archbishop of Toledo from 1927 to 1931. His role as an archbishop ended due to a letter he wrote in 1931 regarding Catholics and who they should vote for. In the letter he urged many Catholics not to vote for government parties in the upcoming June election. This letter would prove to be his downfall, and anger was sparked among st the supporters of the New Republic. Many attacks were carried out against the churches all across Spain. This conflict would eventually call for the separation of church and state, and so religious schools were ordered to be closed. However, the government lacked the funds in order to fund for new public schools to replace the religious schools. All of this contributed to the rest and unease between different political groups in Spain. Many different councils in different regions of Spain took actions themselves as the felt "encouraged" by the new reforms. They began to take anti-clerical actions, such as banning religious procession in their region.
