oct 1, 1934 - Asturias Uprising/Miner Strike

Description:

Following the 1933 elections where the right wing CEDA had dominated the elections, the left had urged Zamora to invalidate the elections, saying that the right had no right to win. With the left outraged, worker strikes began more common. One particular strike in Asturia had widened the gap between the government and the working class. With over 2000 people dead and 30000 people captured, it was clear that peaceful protest was no longer effective. The strike marked the beginning of the "Prelude to the Spanish Civil War."
