jan 10, 1933 - The Casas Viejas massacre

Description:

Workers who were members of the CNT marched the streets in an attempt to start a revolution against the government. Not happy with this, the Civil and Assault Guard arrived in Casas Viejas to set some things straight. Many people of the village fled but a small amount of anarchists stayed and hid inside one house. The government officials lit the house on fire and killed almost everyone inside, as well as arrested anyone in possession of firearms. This massacre ultimately caused national outrage and weakened the position of the revolutionary left. Support for the new Republic began to deplete after this event.
