oct 1, 1936 - Soviet aid for Republicans begins

Description:

Even though Stalin signed the Non-Intervention Pact, the Soviet Union still provided material support to the Republic. This was all done through Operation X. The Soviet Union sent an estimate of 634 and 806 aircrafts, 331 and 362 tanks and 1,034 to 1,895 artillery pieces to the Spanish Republic. The Soviet Union was a major source of arms for the Republicans, but, much of the supplies sent were bad quality and were transported very slowly. The Soviet Union sent between 2,000 and 3,000 military advisers to Spain and only a few hundred troops at a time. The Republic paid the Soviet Union in gold reserves that were transported through France and directly to the USSR.
