oct 16, 1931 - Manuel Azaña came into power replaced Niceto Alcala Zamora as prime minister.

Description:

Power was taken from Niceto Alcala Zamora and Azaña assumed power. With the support of the Socialist Party (PSOE) he attempted to introduce agrarian reform and regional autonomy. He was not able to do so just yet with the blocking of the Cortes. He thought the churches were the reasons for Spains problems and wanted to take away their privileges. Azaña believed that all the convents in Spain were not worth the life of a single Republican. In August, Azaña was able to gain more support which would allow for him to reform the churches the way he wanted to. However things were stopped when he noticed he was lacking in financial resources.
