may 1, 1931 - Anti-clericalism

Description:

Both the provisional government and Azana’s new government were strongly anti-clerical. The church had been involved in matters of the state for all of Spain’s history, and under the new constitution, those privileges were taken away. This angered not only the Church, but the right-wing politicians who supported it. They feared that taking away the privileges of the Church would further diminish the country’s national identity, because religion had historically been such a large part of the nation. Additionally, left wing mobs burned convents across all of Spain during this time. The government did nothing to intervene because they supported the left wing’s actions. This worsened relations between the left and the right, and made the elites doubtful as to whether or not the new government would actually protect their interests.
