1934 Franco brutally suppressed a strike by Spanish miners in the Asturias region. Deploying colonial troops against the 'anti-Spain', mining towns were bombed and shelled. Franco declared, 'this is a frontier war against socialism, communism and whatever attacks civilisation'.
