jul 13, 1933 - Assassination of José Calvo Sotelo
Description:
José Calvo Sotelo was a Spanish Politician, Jurist, and Minister of Finance under the dictatorship of Miguel Primo de Rivera. As Minister of Finance, Sotelo implemented programmes that borrowed aspects of protectionist, nationalist, and interventionist political ideologies. In the time of the Second Spanish Republic, Sotelo was the leading speaker of the anti-republic forces in Parliament. On the 13th of July, 1933, Sotelo was arrested by a group of Assault Guards and was later shot dead in the back of a police truck. Sotelo's death caused many people to become outraged and further accelerated a planned military coup led by General Emilio Mola.
