jan 11, 1936 - Popular Front

Description:

The popular front was a coalition of the Socialists, communists and liberals, and the anarchists had refused to participate. The Popular front was mainly made up of middle-class liberals who were keen on fighting back against the right wing and releasing the people imprisoned because of the Asturias military strike. The forming of the Popular front and its rapid spreading was causing a huge concern for the right-wing party. In April 1936 the Popular Front had found a logical political loophole in the constitution allowing them to remove Niceto Alcalá-Zamora y Torres as the president and replace him with Azaña, a liberal. The Popular Front had encouraged and kept the workers of Spain against the Second Spanish Republic. This made the right-wing extremely worried because they had originally thought the workers anger with the reforms would die out after the Asturia miner strike, but it had actually backfired on them. The Asturian miner strike served a prime example to the left-wing and workers of Spain that the Second Republic wasn’t the government that they had intended on supporting. With the help of the Popular front the new plea for a newly modified government that benefits the workers of Spain had become the new political agenda that they planned to achieve using any means necessary.
