oct 5, 1934 - The Asturias Miner Strike

Description:

The region of Asturias were severely impacted by the Great Depression which had caused the cutting of wages, increased working hours, and increased the unemployment rates. The left-wing groups in Asturias had gathered together and began an armed rebellion by attacking the Civil and Assault Guard barracks. The Asturian miners were mainly fighting back against the introduction of the Confederación Española de Derechas Autónomas, CEDA, into their the Second Spanish Republic . The workers were able to successfully overthrow the Civil and Assault guard and gain the majority of control over the town of Asturias. This miner strike eventually led into a revolutionary uprising of the left-wing versus the right-wing in a fight for the control of the government. The Asturian miner’s strike ended up lasting for about two weeks with an estimated amount of 1,200-2,000 deaths, the strike was demolished. About 30,000 to 40,000 minarets were imprisoned for participating in the strike, and many more miners had become unemployed. Even though the Asturian miner’s strike was essentially a revolutionary uprising information of what happened in Asturias was made publicly known to the rest of Spain, which left people with unsettled questions.
