mar 4, 1933 - Formation of Spanish Confederation of the Autonomous Right

Description:

As the people of Spain were upset with the Second Republic of Spain their disappointment continued to grow leading to them forming another coalition. The coalition that they had formed was called The Spanish Confederation of the Autonomous Right which is also known as CEDA, Confederación Española de Derechas Autónomas, was a combination of all the right winged parties, being led by José María Gil Robles. José María Gil Robles, leader of Acción Popular, had formed CEDA in order to try and defeat their left-wing political party opponents. CEDA’s main goals were to, “Defend religion, property rights and national unity…,” (262). The CEDA refused to support the Second Republic which allowed them to gain huge amounts of financial support from landowners and industrialists, who were hoping that the Azaña’s reforms would be removed. The CEDA were able to have a sweeping victory after their establishment similar to the Socialists and republican victory in the local election in April 1931. As a result of their future victory the CEDA was able to become the largest part in the Cortes, bicameral legislative of Spain, and become much more powerful than their leader José María Gil Robles.
