jan 1, 1932 - Agrarian Reform

Description:

Agrarian reform was a law that aimed to redistribute land to peasants from the wealthy landowners. An Institute of Agrarian reform was set up, and they aimed to buy plots of land that were roughly 23 hectares (~57 acres) and redistribute them to peasants in portions that would allow the peasants to make a decent living. While this law was eventually passed by the Cortes, it took a while because of the correctly predicted backlash by the landowners. Landowners were obviously unhappy that their land was being redistributed because they were making less product, and it was costing more money. Furthermore, while the law had good intentions, the execution of the reform was poor. The government did not have enough funding to properly execute their intentions, and therefore, they also angered the peasants in addition to the elites. Since peasants were unsatisfied with the government’s actions, they turned their support to the anarchists, who promised the same results. However, the anarchists were willing to take more dramatic (violent) measures that would have much more immediate consequences for the elites.
