oct 16, 1931 - Azana Replaces Zamora as Prime Minister

Description:

Niceto Alcala Zamora was the prime minister of Spain from June 1931 to October 1931. He was a conservative lawyer and landowner who was also Catholic. Despite being relatively conservative, he included several radical politicians in his cabinet, such as Manuel Azana, Francisco Largo Caballero, and Indalecio Prieto. He resigned as prime minister because the Cortes (parliament) had included strongly anticlerical articles in the new constitution. Immediately after taking office, Azana, a much more leftist politician, tried to introduce agrarian reform and regional autonomy. This choice was backed by the socialist party (PSOE), however, was shut down by the Cortes. Interestingly, in December 1931, when the Cortes was finally able to agree on a new constitution, Zamora was elected president. Azana was still prime minister.
