oct 6, 1934 - Asturian Miners Strike
Description:
The Asturian miners strike of 1934 was a major strike action, against the entry of the Spanish Confederation of the Autonomous Right (CEDA) into the Spanish government on October 6. It took place in Asturias in northern Spain and developed into a revolutionary uprising. In several mining towns, local unions gathered arms, attacking and seizing local Civil and Assault Guard barracks. It was crushed by the Spanish Navy and the Spanish Republican Army (which used mainly Moorish colonial troops from Spanish Morocco). Francisco Franco controlled the movement of the troops, aircraft, warships and armored trains used in the crushing of the revolution. In the armed action taken against the uprising, approximately 1,500 miners were killed in the fighting, and between 30 and 40 thousand more were arrested. The revolt has been regarded as "the first battle of" or "the prelude to" the Spanish Civil War, considering the death toll.
