The spanish civil war started on July 17, 1936 when Francisco Franco and Emilio Mola started an uprising which was created to overthrow the countrys democratic republic. The rebels efforts to start reovolts throughout spain were only somewhat successful and in areas with a strong right wing, Franco usually won. They forcibly took political power and instituted martial law. in areas where there was strong left wing political presence the revolts were somewhat effective. There were still some officers who stayed loyal to the republic and didnt want to join the uprising.
