may 10, 1931 - Burning of the Convents (Religious Buildings)

Description:

Left-wing groups act with violence towards over 100 churches and convents. There was an outburst of mob violence against the Republic's enemies (right-wing and the Church/Roman Catholics) causing them to burn churches, convents, and religious schools in Madrid and other cities. There were many anticlerical sentiments and legislation meaning moderate Catholicism was soon displaced as it was a topic of disagreement and split for society. Azana supported not doing anything (not intervening). There was an increased concern of separatism in regards to Catholicism causing the left and right to have complete opposing views, making it difficult for a democratic republic to protect the interests of all property and lives of their citizens. This concern was made worse as the years went on.
