General Francisco Franco, an army officer who had opposed the reforms that were introduced in the Second Republic, had become the leader of a revolution. Franco was able to come into power after the death of Generals Sanjurjo and Mola. Franco and his supporters were planning a military uprising in order to overthrow the Spanish Second Republic. They were inspired and influenced to take over the government by the socialist and republican when they were able to successfully overthrow the monarchy. Franco and the Nationalist had begun their revolution while being supported by the right-wing militias and the Catholic Church. Although their hard efforts they were unable to take over any major cities. Although the Spanish coup of July ended up taking much longer than they had anticipated. The coup attempt of Franco actually led to the beginning of the Spanish Civil war, which ended up lasting for about two years.
