jul 1, 1934 - Strike suppressed by General Franco

Description:

The Spanish government decided to put a strike planned by Spanish miners in the Asturias region to a halt, so they sent General Franco to do so. He deployed troops in the "anti-Spain" mining towns, which led to many of them getting bombed and shelled. Franco declared, 'this is a frontier war against socialism, communism and whatever attacks civilisation'. Through attacks and attempts to prevent protests like these, it helped get the message across to the public that nothing was going to change about the way they ran things and that you either listen or face the consequences. Even though the army viewed themselves as what kept Spain in order, actions like these further pushed the country into war and ended up being one of the major reasons for Spain's high instability. The left realized what they needed to do to get together and go against the right side.
