jan 12, 1933 - The Casas Viejas massacre
Description:
The Casas Viejas massacre occurred on January 12, 1933. Workers who were part of the CNT (The Confederación Nacional del Trabajo) were marching in the streets and were trying to start a revolution. Throughout the march, 2 guards were injured. The government attempted to stop the revolution but it ended tragically. The Assault Guard and Civil Guard went to Casas Viejas and many of the villagers fled but there were anarchists who resisted arrest and trapped themselves inside the home of a fellow anarchist named Francisco Cruz Gutiérrez. The Guards put the house on fire and killed many people. There were a total of 24 deaths from this incident. The Casas Viejas massacre led to a national shock and this weakened the position of the left side. There were many debates about who ordered to kill the villagers and many people believed it was the President of the Second Spanish Republic, Niceto Alcalá-Zamora. it was never proven if the orders were issued by the president or not but the following election he was defeated. Socialists who supported the government started to slowly stop supporting the new republic.
