dec 17, 2004 - Manukau City Council criticised over building consent problems

Description:

Manukau claims consent problems not unique

Manukau City says other councils are likely to be suffering building consent problems.

The South Auckland council is being criticised for allowing poor quality, infill housing developments in Howick.

Last night, it pledged to act on the 55 recommendations in an Audit New Zealand report, which mostly involve tightening up procedures and employing more staff.

Manukau mayor Sir Barry Curtis says there have been enormous difficulties in the Howick area, which sparked the audit report, because of its steep terrain and pressure on development, but he believes other regions face the same issues.

He points in particular to the major urban centres where the pressures of growth are being exerted by the private sector.

Sir Barry says Manukau Council officers do a superb job, but the council has been found wanting in its relationship with homeowners, subcontractors, builders, and consultants. He says the council has to come to terms with that criticism.
