oct 4, 1934 - Asturian Miners' Strike of 1934

Description:

This strike put on by Asturian workers in Asturias, Spain, was against the entry of the right-wing CEDA into the Spanish government. Originally a strike, it turned into a revolutionary uprising that in the end was put down by the Spanish Navy and Republican Army, coordinated by Francisco Franco. Franco believed that this uprising was prepared by Moscow agents and therefore was not hesistant to utilize brutal military force against the civilians. This event including other small events in Austria and Catalonia created the Revolution of 1934. The later significance in this event is apparent as this is referred to as the "prelude to the Spanish Civil War" which would occur 2 years after this strike, with this uprising being the smaller scale of that.
