aug 10, 1932 - Sanjurjada

Description:

The Sanjurjada was a military coup that took place in Spain on August 10, 1932. The goal of the coup was to destroy the government in power NOT to the dismantle the new Spanish republic. There were brief battles throughout Madrid and Seville, mostly in Madrid however these were very easily stopped. The battles took place between rebel and loyalist troops, with the commander on the rebel side being Emilio Barrera and the Prime Minister of the republic at the time, Manuela Azaña on the loyalist side. The loyalist troops had the backing of most of the army while the rebels only had around 300 people in Madrid and Seville garrison. General José Sanjurjo on the rebel side took control for almost 24 hours but then later realized defeat, due to his short lived success the coup although unsuccessful was named after him. Although little fatal casualties, only around 10, it had big future implications by leading to the further radicalization of the left wing.
