aug 10, 1932 - Failed Military Coup by Jose Sanjurjo
Description:
On this date in 1932, a military coup was attempted in Spain. This coup was later named Sanjurjada, after the leader of the coup Jose Sanjurjo. The aim of this coup wasn't necessarily to topple the republic but the government in general. This "uprising" was easily suppressed in Madrid, and the only other notable action was recorded in Seville, where Sanjurjo took control for a little over 24 hours. He eventually accepted defeat when he faced resolute governmental response. Azana resorted to sending military units into Seville in order to seize Sanjurjo, and it worked since Sanjurjo admitted defeat.
