Hitler became Fuhrer when Hindenburg died, Hitler declared himself jointly president, chancellor and head of the army. Members of the armed forces had to swear a personal oath of allegiance not to Germany, but to Hitler. This made Hitler the absolute ruler of Germany. Hitler initiated World War ll in Europe by invading Poland on 1 September 1939. He was closely involved in military operations throughout the war and was central to the perpetuation of the Holocaust.
